Stanage Edge, Peak District

Another early start and off up north to the Peak district! We met up with Rowena and Jon just a short distance away from the Edge at the car park near Overstones Farm (SK245828). Helen and Paul were on their way but they were delayed in traffic, so we began to stroll up towards the edge. It was a little windy, but was clear and for the moment not raining, if a little gray! 4494012874_794bb1ce9d We walked off in a north eastward direction and began climbing up onto the edge. It is very pretty here, even on a grey day you can see for quite some distance! Its hard to realise that you are only a few miles from Sheffield here! Onto the ridge we saw several climbers playing around on the rocks as we were jumping about trying to avoid the large puddles of water!

Continuing along the Sheffield Country Walk we crossed the long causeway. Helen and Paul arrived so the rest of us waited, as we watched a group of Landrover enthusiasts trying to get up the causeway. The made a right meal of it, and at one point I thought a few of them may actually topple over. I was bemused and a bit irritated at the same time. The fact that they were making a right mess of the bridleway wasn’t good!!

4494018072_b685bb9104 Helen and Paul caught up with us and we continued further along the edge, and passed High Neb (458m). At Crows Chin, there was a lovely view westward out over Ladybower Reservoir, the Derwent Moors and some rather gloomy clouds over the Kinder plateau. As the wind was picking up we decided to get down of the edge and cut back south onto the edge of Muscar Moor. I passed a rather cheery old mill stone!! We stopped for some lunch and then made our way back onto the causeway back upto onto the edge once more. The causeway was littered with bits of Landrover and there were large scrapes on the rocks.

We continued further on over to Upper Burbage Bridge and then sun even popped out from the clouds. A rather inappropriately named ice cream van, “Mr Creamy” was trading here. Forgetting the name, the ice cream was great. Peering over Fiddlers Elbow we made our way to Higger Tor (434m), before turning north westward across the moors back to the cars.
